Malva/Mallow, the soothing one

What makes mallow so special?

Mallow is one of the gentlest medicinal plants of all.
Its nature is soft, cooling, and enveloping – like a plant-based protective cloak.
Its strength comes primarily from its high content of mucilage.

These mucilaginous substances settle like a protective layer over irritated mucous membranes, soothe the throat, relax the stomach, ease inflammation, cool the tissues, and gently relieve irritation.

Already an important herb in Roman gardens, it was regarded as gentle and “soothing.”

Mallow-leaf-tea (Malva sylvestris)

No.44.4

Mallow is anti-inflammatory and has an exceptionally calming effect on mucous membranes in cases of:

  • scratchy throat

  • dry, irritating cough

  • throat inflammation

  • stomach irritation

  • irritated skin

  • mild inflammation in the mouth

It works gently and persistently, like a plant-based balm.

Soothing for the mind

The mild, cooling, and balancing nature of mallow also has a calming effect on the emotional state.

Gentle for children

Mallow is one of the few herbs that is suitable even for young children (e.g. for mild coughs or an irritated throat).

Active constituents

This composition makes mallow an ideal plant for sensitive individuals. The most important constituents of mallow are:

  • Mucilage – the most important soothing component

  • Flavonoids – anti-inflammatory

  • Anthocyanins – give the flowers their violet-blue color

  • Tannins – mildly astringent

  • Essential oils in small amounts

  • Vitamin C

Preparation of a health herbal tea:

To preserve the valuable constituents, the water used for infusion should not exceed a temperature of 70–80 °C. Mallow tea tastes mild, soft, slightly sweet, and is very gentle on the stomach.

Tradition & history

Already in antiquity, mallow was regarded as “the plant of gentleness,” the cooling herb, the protective “sheath-healer,” and a helper in cases of inner heat and restlessness.
The Greeks called it malaké, meaning “soft” – from which the name “mallow” is derived.

In folk tradition it was said:

“Mallow smooths what is inflamed”
– both physically and emotionally.

Mallow is among the safest medicinal plants of all. It is gentle, soothing to irritation, and suitable for young children.
Only in cases of very strong medication intake should mallow not be taken at the same time, as the mucilage may slow absorption – that is all.

Mallow is a calm, gentle, and protective plant being.
It soothes without dulling, heals without irritating, and strengthens without overwhelming.
